I don't think I've ever prevaricated in the least bit about my desire for the state to fund more public goods!
I'm not accusing you of doing so. But high speed rail (as well as other kinds of 'gadgetbahns' - http://www.cat-bus.com/2017/12/gadgetbahn/ …) is very often sold to the public as something that will pay for itself, often quite rapidly and it just isn't.

But yeah. I support building out more rail infrastructure on the coasts (I also support efforts to raise average US population density) - mostly with regular boring trains. Gadgetbahns and self-financing rail rarely works and mostly should remain "more of a Shelbyville idea."

It'd be interesting to do a cost comparison between increasing commuter rail capacity on the NE corridor from Boston to Philly against the cost of a new NY-Chicago line. 1/
