This last point, I think, is particularly on target. Actual Tolkien is routinely so much richer, more varied and also more rooted in a deep, rich history and literary tradition than imitation-Tolkien. Read some Beowulf folks! And some Icelandic Sagas!
I think one of the few true equivalents of Tolkien may be Jin Yong, because he does the same trick of using a deep knowledge of history, language, and mythology to imagine the rules of the hidden world they imply.
