Thanks for helping to articulate possible concerns. I was starting to feel like an unreasonable curmudgeon.
I sometimes worry that the clever analogies and rigid systems are an effort to get around the proven but labor-intensive, teaching method of telling students "this is how you do it; this is why you do it that way" and then making them do it a bunch, correcting them when they err.
