I often wonder how much the 'LOL, ancient people were dumb and didn't understand anything' reaction because our sources are mostly written by leisured elites instead of artisans. Imagine how our metallurgy would look if you made the average senator describe modern steelworking.
Of course there are limits; we understand why things work, whereas the ancients often only knew that they worked. But I still suspect that, say, steeling iron would seem a lot more sophisticated described by a Roman iron worker than by Diodorus

This is a great point. I bet the ancients had much more sophisticated economic ideas than we ever hear about. Also ties in cultural-decline narratives. Imagine if future historians only had our political polemics as sources, and no raw data on economic standard of living/GDP
Emperor Anastasius seemed to have an instinctive grasp of economics. He understood, for example, that increasing the money supply by minting a bunch of low-value copper coins would help grease the wheels of commerce.
Depends whose reaction you're looking at. Among academics, probably. Among random people on Twitter, it's more likely to be not understanding the era in the first place, and thinking modern science taught in a modern school is the only possible way to know anything.
I feel like this argument runs afoul of things like Senator Ted Stephens's legendary speech about "a series of tubes". ... unless senators actually improvise speeches on the floor? I suppose it's possible in that case, since I don't remember the surrounding context anymore.
