No. We know that *Plutarch,* writing some *500 years* after Leonidas purportedly wrote (not said, but wrote) this, *claims* that Leonidas wrote it. That is *not* the same thing as smoking-gun proof that Leonidas did in fact write it. It is very likely apocryphal.https://twitter.com/BeIzerker/status/1313865283426152448 …

To be fair, there are enough mad "I dare you" responses in history, from McAuliffe's 'NUTS!' to the reply of the Portuguese garrison at Diu to the Ottoman Fleet, "Here are Portuguese used to killing many Moors, who have for a captain Antonio da Silveira...

Sure, but none of them have had even close to the toxic endurance and malign influence of μολὼν λαβέ. MAYBE that quote from the Albigensian Heresy (I think that’s where it’s from) comes marginally close, but not really.

Which quote is that?

I assume he means "Caedite eos, Novit enim Dominus qui sunt eius" which translates more or less to "Kill them all, the Lord will know who is his" or more commonly in English, "Kill them all and let God sort them out." The Albigensian Crusade was not a high point of humanity.

I understand it still occasionally bounces around in military circles, which is very bad, since it is a deeply counter-productive way to talk about COIN and having that attitude encourages atrocities that are both bad on their own but also hinder the mission itself.

Seriously? I always thought it was just movie-villain talk. Anyone who says it for real is a damn fool, on top of the obvious evil.

Effective COIN requires not doing the thing which feels natural (massive retaliation against the community that produces the guys that kill your friends) in order to succeed. it is a profoundly 'unnatural' form of warfare. "Caedite Eos" is, sadly, the natural form of warfare.
