Sure, he might have. But he also might not have. And movements are literally built around the presumption that he did.

Fair, though I'd say those modern movements are built around modern ideology. They grab this or that quote or bit of misremembered history, as it suits them. Take away this retort and they would find or invent another, I'm afraid. The problem isn't the quote, but the movement.
