To be fair, there are enough mad "I dare you" responses in history, from McAuliffe's 'NUTS!' to the reply of the Portuguese garrison at Diu to the Ottoman Fleet, "Here are Portuguese used to killing many Moors, who have for a captain Antonio da Silveira...
...who has a pair of balls stronger than the balls of your basilisks." Basilisks here being a kind of cannon. So I can believe Leonidas might have written that line. But then also he subsequently lost the battle.

Sure, he might have. But he also might not have. And movements are literally built around the presumption that he did.

Fair, though I'd say those modern movements are built around modern ideology. They grab this or that quote or bit of misremembered history, as it suits them. Take away this retort and they would find or invent another, I'm afraid. The problem isn't the quote, but the movement.
