The issue with Afghanistan is path dependency. It is easier to look now at actions taken 2003-2011 and recognize that the expenditure wasn't worth the benefits. But of course now 'credibility' has value too - there is value in a reputation for hurting enemies and helping allies

My own instinct would be to conclude that the value of US involvement in Afghanistan and also the Middle East is now almost purely credibility-value, and so presence should be scaled back to the minimum necessary to maintain that reputation.

Totally agree, and the path dependency point on AF is crucial.
