Here's why I don't like it: It doesn't take scale into account. Our presence in SY, IQ, and AF, among other places, has fluctuated in the past decade but remains relatively small compared to the massive presence in Iraq in the 00s and AF in the late 00s and early 10s.
Oh, I agree. States have frontiers, and in a globalized world, those frontiers will be global. The problem with complaining about 'forever wars' is that it doesn't ask the real question: are the security gains from being in X region worth the cost of being in X region?

The issue with Afghanistan is path dependency. It is easier to look now at actions taken 2003-2011 and recognize that the expenditure wasn't worth the benefits. But of course now 'credibility' has value too - there is value in a reputation for hurting enemies and helping allies
