I am bothered by the suggestion I see floating around that basic decorum is 'elite' or 'effete' or somehow 'unmanly.' To be an adult (of whatever gender) is to act always in restraint. Decorum is just the bare minimum of this. Breaching decorum isn't 'manly' it is childish.

I think this is actually the traditional model of adult behavior (with revisions for the modern era) against the fascist model of masculinity. Umberto Eco's famous essay, Ur-Fascism, gets into this point in more detail - but it is a child's idea of a man that fascism fetishizes.

The word now surely evokes Wilfrid Owen's poem Dulce et Decorum Est in which he excoriates the leaders of the First World War for abusing the ideal of soldierly decorum. From another angle (not applicable to Trump's behaviour) calling for decorum can be a form of tone policing.

I don't mean 'military' as in actually in the military, but the macho architype since most of the modern examples that come to mind were military dictators. Obviously stuff like the debate last night was just childish all round
