since this attracted a couple of particularly stupid commentators, let me point out that the idea of claiming 'X thousand years' of *any nation's* history is inherently artificial and nationalistic, and that Chinese archaeology has been particularly subject to these pressures.

This is a *bad thing* for the study of history in all its forms, because it involves back-projecting a invented vision of the nation, and a well-studied phenomenon not just in China but in, for instance, the territorial disputes causing war in Nagorno-Karabakh right now.

It also, where I've seen it, comes with an assertion that 'civilization' in China is older than anywhere else, a point that - to the degree it is meaningful - is wrong as a matter of the archaeology: 'civilization' (agriculture/cities/ writing) is older in Egypt&Mesopotamia.
