There's an argument to be made for trying to limit tax avoidance too, of course. Speaking broadly, complicating the tax-code with 'loop hole plugging' seems less effective than radical simplification. But it is important not to conflate avoidance and evasion.

Yeah, this is certainly another distinction being elided here, and an important one. At the same time I think it is a distinction somewhat elided by the actual practices of the wealthy, for whom it often amounts to "well, how good is the tax guy who said you should try this"
