I'd like to claim that my liberal extension policy comes from my deep human empathy, but it actually comes from my deep human apathy. It is just easier to give the extension and a kind word than fight over 12 hours. You won't have graded the whole stack in 12 hours anyway.

As for where this comes from, I think some of it is the base power trip. But I think a lot of it is that to succeed in academia requires a lot of discipline, it tends to require a lot of 'rule following' and a willingness to subordinate other demands to academic ones.

And folks with that personality makeup are very likely to demand the same traits in orders - even though, I agree, it's not appropriate (and also it is a problem that academia selects for a mental profile that in many cases quite frankly approaches bad mental disorder).
