I think it's separate issues, though--there are the advisors giving advice on curating public personas, and there are senior scholars messaging people or their advisors telling grad students to stop being "political" online.
My experience may be uncommon, but every talk on curating a public academic persona I've had included advice about either obfuscating one's politics or staying studiously a-political. But that was always in a 1-on-1 or small group setting, where there were good intentions.
If there are senior academics out demanding the whole field stays a-political, I honestly don't know what they think scholarship is for. Especially in history. But I remain bothered by the consistency of the advice and what kind of field we have created if it is effective.
I think in large part it concerns the increasingly corporatized nature of higher ed. There’s less cover and more of a financial threat from upper admin to withhold lines or support if problematic political assertions rise. And they know the state of the market...
