The jobs issue is real, of course (I offer suggestions here: https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2020/08/why-state-universities-have-no-other-choice-but-to-reopen/615565/ … at the end). And I absolutely think job scarcity makes this problem worse because everyone is more precious and more desperate. That said, this was a problem even when there were (a few) jobs.
Academia is supposed to be a place for uncomfortable truths and provocative opinions and we need to start asking why the time-honored advice is timidity when we do our own hiring. Why those who sit on hiring committees advising fear and silence? And how can we fix that?
This feels like yet another small cut due to the transition to students as money units for universities as businesses.(small cut as in death by, I don't actually think it's a small issue)
