The jobs issue is real, of course (I offer suggestions here: https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2020/08/why-state-universities-have-no-other-choice-but-to-reopen/615565/ … at the end). And I absolutely think job scarcity makes this problem worse because everyone is more precious and more desperate. That said, this was a problem even when there were (a few) jobs.

I think it's separate issues, though--there are the advisors giving advice on curating public personas, and there are senior scholars messaging people or their advisors telling grad students to stop being "political" online.

My advisor has been really great about pointing out specific areas of danger and concern when he has them without ever suggesting people should not have public opinions or political views online.
