The jobs issue is real, of course (I offer suggestions here: https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2020/08/why-state-universities-have-no-other-choice-but-to-reopen/615565/ … at the end). And I absolutely think job scarcity makes this problem worse because everyone is more precious and more desperate. That said, this was a problem even when there were (a few) jobs.
Academia is supposed to be a place for uncomfortable truths and provocative opinions and we need to start asking why the time-honored advice is timidity when we do our own hiring. Why those who sit on hiring committees advising fear and silence? And how can we fix that?
I think it's separate issues, though--there are the advisors giving advice on curating public personas, and there are senior scholars messaging people or their advisors telling grad students to stop being "political" online.
My advisor has been really great about pointing out specific areas of danger and concern when he has them without ever suggesting people should not have public opinions or political views online.
