To be clear, this isn't to say Plutarch is worthless as a source. I actually credit Plutarch with more accuracy here than others would (@Roelkonijn would certainly argue with me taking Plutarch at his word re: some things!)

This is your daily reminder that Lycurgus is a mythical, not historical figure and any treatment of Sparta which uses Plutarch's Life of Lycurgus as an account of the formation process of Sparta is nonsense. But Plutarch has functionally no information about the historical Lycurgus. Where he makes claims we can *test* about 8th/7th century Sparta (as cf. to 4th cent. Sparta), he's clearly wrong! If Lycurgus was a real person, *we know nothing about him.*
