This makes so little sense to me - you have total license to blow this off! "Don't worry about it, nothing matters" is the easiest email you can write! https://twitter.com/JoannaMang/status/1307038500584333315 …

The idea of having to take a walk and count to ten because one of your students invoked a global pandemic to explain subpar work is an absolutely alien mindset to me and I truly want to know how you reach it

Also it's a graduate student. Why wouldn't the response be to set up a zoom meeting, workshop this paper, probe the reasons why it isn't up to spec and so on? Like, this is a super-fixable thing. Just gotta sit down and work with them to fix it.

And none of that has to happen promptly if it's not convenient right this second or they're not up to it! Grad students will keep, it is one of the most reliable things about them

Absolutely! Even if you don't go for the 'chalk it up to 2020, nothing matters approach' the other email "this isn't up to grade, let's sit down, figure out what went wrong and make some adjustments" is also an easy email to write and can certainly wait for Monday or whatever.

I mean, I wrote bad papers in graduate school (now I write bad papers for the public ::cue Matchbox 20 "See How Far We've Come::)! And I got sat down by my advisor and we went over why what I wrote wasn't making the grade and what to do about it.
