Trying to write blog posts about how common things were made really brings home how heavily both the sources and the modern scholarship are focused on prestige goods. Tons on silver and gold mining. Iron mining? Almost nothing.

How important was bog iron?
Depends on the period and the level of production. Early iron age Europe, or early middle ages? Seems to be a pretty decent fraction of the total iron production. Roman period or later Middle Ages? Far less important, as bog iron gets swamped by increased iron mining.
