Trying to write blog posts about how common things were made really brings home how heavily both the sources and the modern scholarship are focused on prestige goods. Tons on silver and gold mining. Iron mining? Almost nothing.

Craddock (1995) has a very similar flow-chart for copper . In this case the issue wasn't explanations (I understand the process quite well), but images to be able to show my readers. I especially prefer period images, rather than later reconstructions, which makes it harder.
But yes, certainly there's not nothing! And this sort of basic "how does it work" is something that often the older scholarship does better than the newer scholarship, because it is more focused on laying out the basic details.

My grandfather was a machine toolist in Coventry during late 30s 40s & 50s & 60s and very much self taught man. His books were wonderful. Sadly I only have 2 or 3.
