This does not stop being true just because the expertise is in a field - like history, or art-history, or literature - which is carried out in plain English (or <insert your language>).

Opinions are free, but debates have a price of admission paid for in the work of developing real expertise (which may or may not mean degrees). Becoming an expert in something does not impose a requirement to 'debate' that thing with folks who lack that foundation of knowledge.

And to be clear, this isn't raw credentialism. Acquiring some post-nominal letters is one way to be certain that you have cleared that bar, and signal it clearly, but not the only way. That said, Professor Google's tuition is rarely enough to pay the price of admission.
