How much of that is on the states versus the US Forest Service that Trump keeps trying to defund? Even if you make sense of his nonsense, it's still his fault for not pushing forward policy solutions and funding to make substantial changes (and denying climate change).

Oh sure. He gets no credit for an issue he clearly doesn't even remotely understand. My impression is that a significant chunk is federal land, but the most crucial areas (near cities) is state land. I'm not up on the details. Also, climate change clearly matters a lot here.

A lot of Trump's most incoherent quotes come from him having heard a briefing on an issue, remembering a third of it, and making up the other two-thirds to fit. In this case, he's actually more or less right in the broad strokes, but still remarkably dumb on the details.
