Not gonna lie, "But we talked about the pro-fascist framing of our short in an article" may be the weakest defense for making a short that presents the fascist space-Nazi as a tragic and romantic heroic figure I have ever read.https://www.starwars.com/news/star-wars-squadrons-hunted …

I know I've got some Star Wars fans upset with me in my mentions, but honestly this is about the baldest example of just accepting a pro-fascist framing I have ever seen.

It's not even a "new kind of Star Wars story!" there's been LOTS of focus on sympathetic Imperials and imperial-adjacent characters for a while?

Honestly what a lot of this stuff really screams to me is that some part of Disney wants, very badly, to turn Star Wars into a "neutral" setting, a gray vs grey morality conflict, and just wants to keep using the established IP & iconography of Star Wars.

Well, the Republic was in the prequels was truly a non-democratic shitshow run from the shadows by a bunch of space wizards. Lucas went to full cartoon space nazis, but the pre-Imperial regime did suck. And for what we saw in Ep. VII+, the New Republic was quite uselles, too.

SW´s biggest flaw is that it never explores the insane, obvious faults of the good guys, so we end up in a battle between genocidal maniacs and painfully naive boy scouts.

There are so many other frames that serve the "you play the bad guys" role - this pilot could just as easily been in the mythologized style of the Red Baron - affable, chivalrous, maybe even charming, but still definitely a bastard at the end of the day
