I think we're making a lot of big assumptions about a tiny slice of something

In this case, I'm analyzing a single text - the advertisement itself - as a short film on its own. As I note at the end, I'm reserving judgement on the final product until I know what is in it. But short ad films influence the culture too, not just final products.

Yet you're contrasting it with the totality of the '94 TIE game, which is a gigantic narrative that has room for nuances the short doesn't. I understand why the short's tone rubs people the wrong way but I don't think it's fair to hold both to the same standards.

Honestly, I included the '94 game because I was sure if I didn't, people would demand comment on it. That said, the marketing of Tie-Fighter was ominous in tone, not heroic or tragic. The box art has a big, scary Darth Vader mask and it uses the imperial march heavily.

TIE was all-in on the "bad guy" narrative though--I think XvT would be a more instructive comparison based on what Squadrons seems to be doing
