Very interesting thread. I'm curious what @AdmiralNick22 @admiraljello @eleventhirtyate and @chaosbria think?https://twitter.com/BretDevereaux/status/1305909431960506369 …
Honestly, I included the '94 game because I was sure if I didn't, people would demand comment on it. That said, the marketing of Tie-Fighter was ominous in tone, not heroic or tragic. The box art has a big, scary Darth Vader mask and it uses the imperial march heavily.

The steam store still has its opening bit: https://store.steampowered.com/app/355250/STAR_WARS_TIE_Fighter_Special_Edition/ … The fascist overtones and ominous tone are far clearer. Deep, dark ominous music, blue, under-lit palaces, fascist speeches...

So honestly, even just contrasted with Tie-Fighter (1994)'s promotional material, the difference in tone is pretty obvious.

TIE was all-in on the "bad guy" narrative though--I think XvT would be a more instructive comparison based on what Squadrons seems to be doing

fwiw the official site has an in-depth article about the short and they dig a bit into exactly why they chose an Imperial POV for this: https://www.starwars.com/news/star-wars-squadrons-hunted …
