...but because it was offered up by one of the physics supremacists as evidence that physicists really are just smarter and other academics really just dumber. The irony that he had just failed in a basic humanities skill - comprehending complex texts - was, alas, lost on him.

Afaict from the article the physicists' original model here actually led the state government to (accurately) do lockdowns earlier, which helped things, and only caused problems when the provost overrelied on its specifics due to motivated reasoning.

So the "arrogant phycisicts think they know everything, leading to a disaster" doesn't seem to really match the story as written. And it's not like actual epidemiologists haven't made bigger mistakes here (remember the months the CDC was advising against masks?)
