One thing we forget about WW1 is that Germany was, in fact, occupying large amounts of invaded territory where it committed extensive crimes against civilians.

I. Hull, Absolute Destruction (2006) is good on this topic, though I have found its reception divided on field-lines, with military and WWI historians reacting positively, but later-period Germanists frustrated because of how it fits into the Sonderweg debate.

one thing I remember being pretty shocked to learn is that the mass execution of civilian hostages we associate with the Nazis was in fact both conventional French and German war policy in the 19th and early 20th century.
