That's arguably the primary way it's used in medieval sources, that or "horseman." It's a pretty interesting study, although I'd hardly call it "really fraught" as this fellow did, or any impediment to calling servicemembers milites if the itch struck.
That was my impression - I just didn't want to pronounce so boldly. I vaguely recalled seeing milites in place of equites in the first crusade sources I've read, but that was years ago. Dhuoda was what I had to mind.

Yes, milites serves as an easy reference for horse a lot in the Crusader era. But it's a term that evolves over time and has different colors in its usage in different places/times/contexts, or even across authors.
