Is the use of the term "foolishness," as contrasted to wisdom, in deliberate parallel with Gandalf's judgement of Saruman? In reading your aside, it seemed to me that Saruman almost personifies being intelligent, but foolish

It's a dichotomy I've found myself coming back to more and more. Because wisdom or foolishness is about choice, it can both carry moral value (a person who willfully persists in foolishness is a 'bad' person), but also the ability to improve, to be better.

Hi
@BretDevereaux I've bee trying to see your blog for the last 2 weeks but is not working. I am in Colombia, do you know if there is a problem with blogspot? -
I confess I am not a tech person. I'm hosted by WordPress (.com not .org), so you might try to take it up with their tech people. My analytics say I have gotten around a hundred hits from Colombia in the last week, so whatever it is, it may not be country-wide.
