I appreciate a lot of what you're saying, but I really wish that folks wouldn't lump all admin into "useless bloat" As an academic advisor I work my ass off to help stdnts w/ issues that their faculty won't or can't. We're not useless bloat. We're underpaid and overworked,
With you on this, actually. When I get time, I want to tweet about where I think the 'administrative bloat' is and where it isn't and what the problems are. Traditional student services (like advising) and department staff aren't the problem, so far as I can tell.

A good place to start is the insanity of having 1 advisor per several hundred (or in some cases, thousand) students and expect perfect counsel down to the most nuanced of programmatic details.
