Default rates on student loans at for-profits are 3-4 times higher than traditional colleges; the quality of the education there is well known to be garbage - and despite basically being sham-schools, many of them still run out of money and fail. 33/41

FYI - I've continued this thread here: https://twitter.com/BretDevereaux/status/1297679530744852481 … talking about university staff vs. administration, what we mean when we say 'bloat' and what we might do about it.

Can you clarify a point on the business model of ed? I agree with your tweets on it, but the assumption seems to be it is externally imposed. But tweet 15 seems more operative. One can't opt out of a red queen race unilaterally and survive. Do individual states have any choice?

Thank you for a good thread. Your suggested solutions are good, but delayed too much (nobody knows when covid will end) and miss the need to shift away from "college for everyone model".

Reading this I wonder the admin costs of adjuncts- hiring processes, access to University services, networks, etc, training in processes, support & coordination of people not used to their system, software, quirks, etc.
-
They are high and off-loaded onto already overburdened faculty who run the hiring committee, etc. If you’re lucky, you have an admin who can help with the paperwork. Every new hire requires a ton of extra labor but none of this is visible to the students or felt by higher ups

Great thread. Two adds: Some of the administrative cost increase comes from the requirement to add technology, which is very expensive, wears out quickly, becomes obsolete quickly, & is an essential part of 21st century education. It isn't an "amenity" & it isn't cheap. 1/3
-
The other is that over the last 40 years the government regulations affecting school have increased spectacularly. Most of them are excellent regulations (ADA, EEOC, HIPPA for example) but compliance requires extra hard costs, extra staffing & it's not an "amenity."
