Now don't get me wrong, I am an ardent capitalist. Like, really very much so. Like - it irritates my colleagues. But just because markets work in *some* things doesn't mean markets work in *everything*...31/41

Addendum on 'the business model' of education - this article at Inside Higher Ed. from 2009 does a good job of explaining it. Back then, it was the up-and-coming model. It is now standard at almost all major state schools, even though it doesn't work.https://www.insidehighered.com/views/2009/02/16/business-model-wrong-model …

Addendum 2: Some folks are pointing out that adjunctification here is a little lopsided and incomplete. And they're right! There just wasn't space in an already overlong thread. Being an adjunct myself, you can bet I have thoughts! But that will have to wait for another thread.

FYI - I've continued this thread here: https://twitter.com/BretDevereaux/status/1297679530744852481 … talking about university staff vs. administration, what we mean when we say 'bloat' and what we might do about it.

But TT faculty often do NOT perfect their teaching. Their incentives, in fact, encourage them to focus their efforts elsewhere (publications, grants, grad students, personal reputation building). Hardly any IHE gives promotions, raises or real prestige for teaching.

If you want to change higher ed, change the incentive structures for faculty.

This is an excellent thread I’ve retweeted. But here there is an error. Students have not (generally) come for an education. They’ve come for a credential. Ask them if they’d take the degree with an A but without attending classes and most will take that deal.
Kiitos. Käytämme tätä aikajanasi parantamiseen. KumoaKumoa

"NONE OF THIS MONEY GOES TO ANYONE WHO TEACHES." Why I left academia in one sentence. I refused to be an adjunct slave. I had a great career w/good pay as a visiting assistant prof, but eventually I started pricing out so I left. When people squawk about FREE COLLEGE, I 1/2

2/2 always wonder who will pay for it. "Teaching faculty"? Tenured content providers (aka faculty)? Oh, there is so much I could say about all of this. So, so very much. And "teaching faculty"? Please. Those are serfs & you do know it. I'm glad I left the profession.
