So, a lot of new followers. Welcome! I mostly use this space to nerd out a bunch about ancient history, military history, or both. I also have a blog where I do mostly that thing, but more so: https://acoup.blog/ I also occasionally opine on geopolitics/nat-sec Cheers!

I've been wondering about the history of opposing generals meeting under a flag of truce, how often it happened, what precautions were taken and how often one side broke the parley. Any chance of you taking up the topic of parley and perfidy in ancient and medieval warfare?

Or alternatively do you have any books you could recommend on the subject?

Nothing off the top of my head. Ancient generals basically never met face to face like this - the one exception I can think of is Valerian's surrender at Edessa (260) where he was betrayed and captured, but this was *after* the battle (which Valerian had lost).

My *sense* is that this is really an 18th/19th century convention (along with the 'Honors of War') which gets retrojected backwards (typically as a sign that earlier warfare as primitive and quaint), not a common feature of the pre-modern world.

More often, negotiations, if they were done, were done through ambassadors and heralds, or by letter exchanges.

I can't point to a specific book on the subject though - this is just my sense of having read a LOT of pre-modern battle narratives. Sometimes you exchange letters, maybe there is a last-ditch negotiation with heralds. Generals and kings don't normally meet in person.
