So, a lot of new followers. Welcome! I mostly use this space to nerd out a bunch about ancient history, military history, or both. I also have a blog where I do mostly that thing, but more so: https://acoup.blog/ I also occasionally opine on geopolitics/nat-sec Cheers!

More often, negotiations, if they were done, were done through ambassadors and heralds, or by letter exchanges.
-
I can't point to a specific book on the subject though - this is just my sense of having read a LOT of pre-modern battle narratives. Sometimes you exchange letters, maybe there is a last-ditch negotiation with heralds. Generals and kings don't normally meet in person.

What about Hannibal and Scipio Africanus meeting before Zama. Or Sulla and Mithridates meeting to negotiate an end to their war. Or Harold Godwinson meeting with Harold Hardrada at Stamford Bridge. Or Henry II and Philip Augustus negotiating a truce at Gisors.
-
I also seem to recall some story about two brothers who were both vying to be Emperor in Rome meeting in person to negotiate (which resulted in one of the brothers murdering the other), but I forget their names.
