I have to say, the speed with which the youtube algorithm dumps you into the fetid hatedom swamps is both depressing and frustrating. Example: I am a sci-fi nerd. Not news to my blog readers. And I like listening to intelligent (or at least funny) analysis of sci-fi. 1/16

I'm not here to harsh anyone's jam except for the guys with bad Sparta takes. But I didn't like tLJ or RoS. I also am not fond of the dark, cynical tone of the new Star Trek. I find it off-putting. I still enjoy thoughtful discussions of it though... 6/16

...because sometimes the discussion about art can be enjoyable art all its own. There's positive value to analyzing even flawed or frustrating fiction. What I do not want are videos crowding out my recommended list loaded with angry yelling about fiction...7/16

But those questions require evidence, either from the author's other statements or from the text itself. But there's this whole ecosystem of angry screaming fans (is there a word for a 'hate-fan' of a franchise?) who attribute creative decisions to a vast plan...9/16

By this point, I've been exposed to enough of these damn things that I could make a taxonomy of them. But I don't want to because - I wish I could shout to the algorithm here - I do not care to watch those videos. They have even less artistic merit than Rise of Skywalker! 12/16

Now I use science fiction as an example because it happens a lot. Obviously that's a pretty meaningless example. But it also happens with politics - the moment the algorithm thinks it knows your politics, it steers you towards the crazy! 13/16

Often in my case, it steers me towards *mutually*exclusive* forms of crazy at the same time! I get that this is all driven by engagement, youtube is a business, so on and so forth. But it's really frustrating, because a recommend page filled with junk... 14/16

...is, of course, a recommend page that is not filled with things I might actually want to listen to or watch. And also, nothing deflates me worse than clicking on a video hoping for thoughtful commentary and getting crazy hate-fans instead! 15/16

I have no punchy ending to this. I'm not saying people shouldn't be able to bash on Star Wars in their little corner of the internet (though I wish some of these folks knew how churlish they sound). I just wish youtube didn't keep driving me to that angry clubhouse. end/16

Addendum: And before the first person jumps in to point this out, yes, I put a critique of The Last Jedi on the internet (here: https://acoup.blog/2019/12/29/miscellanea-the-latest-jedi/ …). I like to think it falls on the 'thoughtful critique of themes and execution' end of the spectrum, rather than screaming.
