The police, after all, have 'escalation dominance' - they can escalate violence to a level the protesters cannot match. So escalation mostly helps the police, not the protesters. Win the battle and you'll escalate matters and lose the war. 4/13

Great thread Bret, thanks for taking the time to break it down. I really liked the identification of being unable to advance.

Thanks for the thread. Seeing shield tactics & Clausewitz mentioned in this thread brings me back 20+ years to Hist089 with Willis Brooks and Warfare in Ancient Greece with Prof McCoy. Still have my copy of On War. Then I saw you're a PhD at UNC... figures.

They don't want reform, though, because the ability to do violence without repercussion and to act without oversight is important to them. Hence responding to protest with steadily increasing violence

Not if part of the reason you became a cop was to be able to abuse your power.

Better to defund and redirect that funding to other programs that better help the health of the communities they serve. Demilitarize the police, bolster social services, mental health. Reform is kicking the can down the road and hoping people forget about being angry.
-
okay but how would you reform the police to solve this problem without also doing all of those things we've been playing semantics games with alt-right idiots for too long already
