@BretDevereaux .. Do you also read non European history? I enjoyed your writing on elephants. Would love to read your perspective on Indian, East Asian and South East Asian civs! Again, really enjoy reading your blog!
I do my best to keep a global perspective in my major research themes (military and economic history). But outside of the Mediterranean world, I am captive to the existing secondary scholarship, since I can't read the languages or develop the expertise in the source tradition.

For instance with war elephants, for the material in India (rather than in the Med.) I relied heavily, as I note, on Trautmann's Elephants and Kings. That tends to limit what I feel confident to write about more globally, since I don't want to get out in front of myself.
