I can bash out a 2000 word tumblr post in like an hour, when I have things to say. When I'm doing serious formal writing, I feel good when I get 300 words in a day. (That second number needs to improve, but the contrast will always be there.)

Ayep. My formal writing runs at about 500 words a day or so. 1,000 on a very good day. Every so often I'll have a 'sprint' day where the muse strikes me, but it is rare (and often requires more intensive editing later). And then I'm pretty much useless for the rest of the day

Hi
@BretDevereaux .. Do you also read non European history? I enjoyed your writing on elephants. Would love to read your perspective on Indian, East Asian and South East Asian civs! Again, really enjoy reading your blog! -
I do my best to keep a global perspective in my major research themes (military and economic history). But outside of the Mediterranean world, I am captive to the existing secondary scholarship, since I can't read the languages or develop the expertise in the source tradition.
