I can bash out a 2000 word tumblr post in like an hour, when I have things to say. When I'm doing serious formal writing, I feel good when I get 300 words in a day. (That second number needs to improve, but the contrast will always be there.)
Truth there. My average weekly post is something like 6,000 words and people ask 'how do you write that much' - but that misses the point. Ayep. My formal writing runs at about 500 words a day or so. 1,000 on a very good day. Every so often I'll have a 'sprint' day where the muse strikes me, but it is rare (and often requires more intensive editing later). And then I'm pretty much useless for the rest of the day

I do my best to keep a global perspective in my major research themes (military and economic history). But outside of the Mediterranean world, I am captive to the existing secondary scholarship, since I can't read the languages or develop the expertise in the source tradition.
