I feel like we should let people tell you the honorific if they want. As a white straight cis male it's easy for me to go by Philip (full disclosure, my wife the the professor, not me) because people assume I have a higher completed degree when they see me than I do.
Yeah, insisting on honorifics from staff is asinine. I am Bret to staff, admin, colleagues and friends; Dr. Devereaux to students (and I guess readers I don't know?). The odd grey area is professional contacts (journalists, etc), but they tend to default to formal, so

I know many of my wife's colleagues who do insist on the honorific do so because so many people assume they don't belong.

I generally eschew honorifics, but insist that Bret goes to parade-rest and addresses me as Sergeant. Pretty laid back.
