When can you start calling someone who has a doctorate by their first name? I've been corrected on an email chain after someone kept signing their first name only (I had no idea) & would like to never repeat that mistake

I always assumed signing my own email with just my first name was a clear way to signal to someone else that they could call me by that name and omit the Dr. Lastname stuff. If I wanted things to stay formal, I'd use a signature block.
