Your thoughts more than welcome too! For Carrhae, obligatory source problems aside, I read the Parthians as being very close - the dust from their horses is blinding the legionaries. In the linked post I discuss T. May's caracole model, which I think is probably right.
One thing that comes out clearly in Tod's tests is also the decline in accuracy. Now surely a Parthian horse-archer has more practice than Tod - but he's shooting from a horse at men trying to kill him. I'd bet lethality-from-accuracy is a huge reason for archerCav to get close.

I haven't seen the new video yet, but you also have to remember long range fire with arrows descending at terminal velocity. Heavier warbow arrows doing plunging fire from 200m (perhaps as much as 300m, I don't accept that a formation would achieve much beyond that)

But yes, a few long range volleys, followed by horse archer caracoles, trailed by armored horse prepared to charge into shaky formations. The latter only introduced (I suspect) when facing sedentary forces.
