And you can see that in Tod's figures! To take the type 9, the decline from 55m/s to 46m/s (c. 16% decline) causes a drop in impact energy from 129 to 91 joules (c. 30%). That said, these tests make me appreciate the value of the metal boss of the scutum which protects the hand!

Not Wayne, but raises interesting questions about how close the Parthians needed to get at Carrhae to allegedly pierce shields and mail. Energy loss over range also helps explain the functionality of sallies by defending forces against ranged skirmishers.

Your thoughts more than welcome too! For Carrhae, obligatory source problems aside, I read the Parthians as being very close - the dust from their horses is blinding the legionaries. In the linked post I discuss T. May's caracole model, which I think is probably right.
