The deceleration data is actually incredibly useful. Way back in July 2019, I commented on the blog that one frustrating thing was arrow tests measuring energy at release rather than impact at range (https://acoup.blog/2019/07/04/collections-archery-distance-and-kiting/ …). One thing I wasn't confident with was deceleration.

Tod's experiments here suggest that deceleration over range is actually more severe than I thought: 15-20% rather than c. 6-10% at 100m. That's going to have a bigger effect on energy of impact because that's 1/2mv^2 (in joules).

And you can see that in Tod's figures! To take the type 9, the decline from 55m/s to 46m/s (c. 16% decline) causes a drop in impact energy from 129 to 91 joules (c. 30%). That said, these tests make me appreciate the value of the metal boss of the scutum which protects the hand!
