COVID-teaching challenges: how to signal to my students that I want them to be comfortable coming to me with concerns as the world burns down around us, when I have all of the warm, inviting personality of an ice-block.
I mean, someone has to. And there aren't a lot of options. Upper-level administrators aren't going to interact with these students. For the most part, I am the primary point of contact between them & 'the system.' If there's gonna be empathy, it's gotta be from me.

There's also university staff of course - student services, department managers etc. Good ones do a fair bit of the empathy too. But I've seen behind that curtain - low-end admin folks who do that work are *swamped* by the insanity of this moment, trying to get everything set.
