And yes, I know: the obvious answer is 'tell them that.' Which is my plan! But I've found that despite the fact that I am actually a doofus, my students tend to read me as Dr. Severe McIce-Face. Which is normally fine? Sometimes good? But right now, not so good.

And at the same time, it's a fine line to walk between "Don't worry, we'll get through this together" and implying the course won't involve work. Because you have to work to learn things - and in the end, the learning of things is my goal for my students!

I found it made teachers approachable if I knew what they could and could not do. Tell them you will give extensions, are willing to do open book tests: give examples of what you can do to help. That provides an incentive to talk to you.
