And at the same time, it's a fine line to walk between "Don't worry, we'll get through this together" and implying the course won't involve work. Because you have to work to learn things - and in the end, the learning of things is my goal for my students!

I mean, someone has to. And there aren't a lot of options. Upper-level administrators aren't going to interact with these students. For the most part, I am the primary point of contact between them & 'the system.' If there's gonna be empathy, it's gotta be from me.

Do a session on Tolkien’s experiences with despair (you’ve done most of the legwork already for your blog) and use that as a bridge? You can camouflage it even a bit more if you want.

I may work in a bit of Marcus Aurelius this year. It's an Ancient Mediterranean course, so he fits. And it's a great text for dealing with the curve-balls life throws at you.
