And yes, I know: the obvious answer is 'tell them that.' Which is my plan! But I've found that despite the fact that I am actually a doofus, my students tend to read me as Dr. Severe McIce-Face. Which is normally fine? Sometimes good? But right now, not so good.

And at the same time, it's a fine line to walk between "Don't worry, we'll get through this together" and implying the course won't involve work. Because you have to work to learn things - and in the end, the learning of things is my goal for my students!

End every class 5 minutes early (ten if you can) with that time reserved for chitchat or making appointments (do the latter first).

Yeah - easier to do with face-to-face (I'm online-synchronous this semester) and with smaller groups (I'm at 70), but I do this with f2f. I often come in a few minutes early to do pre-class chit-chat and then stay up at the front after class ends for questions/appointments.
