Ben Shapiro and others have recently been fairly explicit about this; quite apart from 'historicity' as it's normally understood in everyday usage, he believes a 'usable past' of this kind is required for national cohesion and so must be fostered on that basis alonehttps://twitter.com/Patrick_Wyman/status/1287749578884648961 …
'American Exceptionalism' is odd. In its literal meaning "the USA is an unusual/unique country" it is obviously true But in its typically *intended* meaning of "the USA is the best country" or "a perfect country" it is at best a statement of preference, at worst obviously false

For sure. I think the intended meaning is "exceptionally good", not "perfect", but the distinction tends to be ground away quickly in real debates.

FWIW, the US has likely done the most good globally in the last century, but that's expected of the most powerful nation. By the same token, they've also done close to the most bad. Not #1, because Hitler/Stalin/Mao, but top 10. Power gets used, for good and for ill.
