Like usual, the extremists on both sides are dumb. The US is better than a lot of nations, but still imperfect. The 1619 Project approach of "slavery, therefore we are all laboring under an infinite burden of original sin" is dumb. "American exceptionalism" isn't too much better.

A good approach recognizes the virtues and the vices alike. But if it doesn't fit into a tweet, it's too complex for a Red Tribe/Blue Tribe argument, so people go to extremes to mock their enemies, and wind up sounding like fools.
