I should note I focus on Judaea here as an example of the process failing (I'm working on something rather more in depth on that topic) but the Iceni revolt (read: Boudica) in Britain shows the same dynamics of an excess in violence leading to an erosion of power.

Mistaking violence (or force) for power is a trap that occurs again and again. It even captured neatly in Hamilton - the trap of "I'll kill your friends and family to remind you of my love." Force and violence can create control - and control, well used, can foster power...

...but doing that means having a strategy for how control is to be used. There needs to be a plan to create power, not merely a plan to inflict violence. I keep recommending (and will again) this talk: https://youtu.be/4I8kic8xZh8 as a good starting point on 'consolidating gains.'

I think if anything is really obvious about what is going on in Portland - and the apparent plan now to expand that program to other cities - the administration has no idea of how to build power. Instead, they are eroding power with violence, a strategy which never ends well.

If y'all want a book-length study of consolidation in practice in a more modern setting, I recommend (indeed, I did recommend: https://acoup.blog/2020/03/06/fireside-friday-march-6-2020/ … ) Nadia Schadlow's War and the Art of Governance: Consolidating Combat Success into Political Victory (2017).

Enjoyed the article immensely. Although I have some issues with Arendt definition of power, in this context I believe it applies perfectly. Good insights.

I've been thinking on this, and every competent of the article is on point, but there's one thing I think needs to be added to it. Which is that while violence does not preserve the valuable things a government may want (compliance, productivity, quality of life, etc) it *does*-
-
-hope to preserve the personal continued power and security of individuals in government. Specifically officials whom without violence would in short order find themselves to deposed and possibly tried. It's a mismatch of personal and global incentives.
