What bothers me about conspiracy theories is just how stupid (a word I do not use often/lightly) they are. Religions, philosophies may be non-falsifiable, but most conspiracy theories are eminently falsifiable, because they have been falsified. And yet there they are!
It speaks, I suppose, to the profound emotional need to believe the comforting thing over the true, or even mildly plausible thing. And if you are thinking "I wonder which conspiracy theory he means?" the answer is probably "yes."

I listened to an author on @NewYorker radio hour yesterday who highlighted how community participation plays a big role in CT behaviours and beliefs, too. A lot of outsiders seem to gather round these ideas because without them they might not “fit in” anywhere.
